The Pillow Box (ECMA F10.10) is an elegant, self-tensioning curved packaging structure that pops into a 3D pillow shape when its four parabolic end flaps are folded inward along curved score lines. The mathematical secret of a functional pillow box is that the inner crease arc and the outer cut arc of each end flap MUST share the exact same circular radius (R_arc) mirrored across the chord line; otherwise, the flap buckles or leaves gaps. Our parametric engine computes the exact sagittal chord radius from your desired Body Length (L), Flat Width (W), and Gusset Loft Depth (H).

Mathematical Blank & Tolerance Formulas

Flap Chord Depth (D_flap)
D_flap = max(18mm, 0.58 * H)

Determines the inward sweep of the curved end flap based on desired center loft depth.

Mirrored Circular Arc Radius (R_arc)
R_arc = (W^2 / (8 * D_flap)) + (D_flap / 2)

Intersecting chord theorem ensuring the outer cut arc and inner crease arc fold symmetrically with zero buckling.

Step-by-Step Export & Assembly Guide

  1. 1 Set Body Length (L, point-to-point center length), Panel Width (W, flat width of one side), and Gusset Loft Depth (H, controls how deep the curved end flaps sweep).
  2. 2 Preview the mirrored circular cut and crease arcs in the 2D CAD view.
  3. 3 Export as 1:1 .SVG (compatible with Illustrator, Cricut Design Space, Silhouette, and LightBurn) or .DXF/.PDF.
  4. 4 Pre-score the curved blue lines firmly before gluing the side seam; once glued flat, gently press both side edges inward to pop the curved end flaps into lock position.

Packaging & CNC Engineering FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Pillow Box Dieline

Why do the curved flaps on a pillow box stay closed without glue or locks?

Because the crease line is an inward-curving arc on a cylindrical surface, folding the flap past 90 degrees puts the paperboard fibers into bistable elastic tension, causing the flap to snap and stay pressed against the opposite flap.

Can I cut this pillow box template on a Cricut Maker or Silhouette Cameo?

Yes! Export the .SVG file with the Dimensions layer turned OFF. In Cricut Design Space, set the BLUE dashed paths to 'Score' (using the Scoring Wheel or Stylus), set the RED path to 'Basic Cut', select both layers, and click 'Attach'.

Which side of the pillow box should fold in first?

The end flap with the semicircular thumb notch should be folded in FIRST, followed by the solid un-notched flap on top for a clean exterior finish.

What cardstock weight is best for pillow boxes?

Between 270gsm and 350gsm (100 lb to 130 lb cover stock) is ideal. Paper thinner than 220gsm lacks the spring tension needed to snap the curved flaps shut.
