Before cutting a large 6-panel plywood or acrylic project, running a 90-second Laser Kerf & Slot Calibration Comb saves sheets of wasted material. Because wood humidity, lens focal length, and laser power alter the beam kerf between 0.06mm and 0.25mm, this parametric tool generates an 11-slot stepped test comb centered around your nominal material thickness (T) and target kerf (K) in 0.025mm increments. Simply cut two small combs (or slide the reference tab into each slot) to identify the exact slot width that produces a zero-play friction fit.

Step-by-Step Export & Assembly Guide

  1. 1 Measure your material's nominal thickness (T) with calipers and enter your estimated kerf (K, default 0.12mm).
  2. 2 Export the 1:1 .DXF or .SVG file and cut it from a small scrap corner of your material.
  3. 3 Take the cut reference tongue (or edge of the sheet) and test-fit it into the 11 numbered slots from widest to narrowest.
  4. 4 The slot that grips firmly without cracking the material gives your exact Effective Slot Width and true machine Kerf.

Packaging & CNC Engineering FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Laser Kerf Test Gauge

How do I calculate my laser cutter's kerf using this calibration comb?

Measure the uncut sheet thickness (T) with calipers. Find the slot on the comb where the test tab fits snugly. Subtract that slot's programmed width from T: Kerf = T - Programmed_Slot_Width.

Does laser kerf change when I change material thickness?

Yes! A thicker material (like 6mm MDF vs 3mm plywood) requires slower cutting speed and higher power, and the conical laser beam diverges above and below the focal point, increasing effective kerf by 0.04mm to 0.08mm.

Why are the slot numbers placed on the SCORE layer instead of the CUT layer?

The slot width markings are placed on the SCORE (Emerald/Engrave) and DIMENSIONS layers so your laser lightly vector-marks the numbers in 3 seconds rather than cutting tiny letters all the way through.

How much scrap wood does this kerf gauge require?

The default gauge measures just 135mm x 42mm (about 5.3 x 1.6 inches) and takes less than 45 seconds to cut.
