The ECMA A20.20.03.01 Reverse Tuck End (RTE) and Straight Tuck End (STE) folding carton is the universal paperboard packaging structure used for cosmetics, dropper bottles, pharmaceuticals, playing cards, and retail consumer goods. Constructed from four alternating body panels (L, W, L, W) joined by a 15-degree tapered side glue flap, the carton closes at the top and bottom via hinged tuck flaps flanked by notched dust flaps. Our parametric generator calculates exact dust-flap shoulder relief notches (1.5T) and friction-lock tuck ears so the lid closes flush without springing open on retail shelves.

Structural Geometry & Allowances

Mathematical Blank & Tolerance Formulas

Total Flat Blank Width (W_blank)
W_blank = W_glue_flap + 2(L) + 2(W) + 3(T)

Combines the tapered side glue flap (15-25mm), two front/back panels (L), two side panels (W), and three vertical score line allowances.

Total Flat Blank Height (H_blank)
H_blank = H + 2(W - 0.5T) + 2(L_tuck_flap)

Sums the vertical carton height (H), top and bottom closure panels (W minus crease clearance), and top/bottom friction tuck flaps.

Dust Flap Relief Inset (Delta_dust)
Delta_dust = 1.5 * T + 0.5 mm

Prevents the dust flap crease shoulder from colliding with the main closure panel during 90-degree folding.

Pre-Press & Production SOP

Step-by-Step Export & Assembly Guide

  1. 1 Input your product's Width (front face L), Depth (side gusset W), and Height (H), plus paperboard caliper thickness (typically 0.4mm to 0.6mm for retail cartons).
  2. 2 Verify the flat blank layout in the 2D blueprint and check the 3D folded carton preview.
  3. 3 Download the 1:1 .SVG or .PDF to place your packaging graphics in Adobe Illustrator (remember to add a 3mm outer bleed around the RED cut line).
  4. 4 Apply adhesive along the tapered side Glue Flap, fold the carton flat along the 2nd and 4th crease lines to bond the tube, then pop open and tuck the bottom and top flaps.

Packaging & CNC Engineering FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Tuck End Folding Carton

What is the difference between Reverse Tuck End (RTE) and Straight Tuck End (STE) boxes?

In a Reverse Tuck End (RTE) box, the top closure panel hinges from the back wall while the bottom closure panel hinges from the front wall, allowing multiple cartons to nest tightly on a printing sheet to save 8-12% paperboard waste. In a Straight Tuck End (STE) box, both flaps hinge from the back wall so no raw cut edge is visible on the front face.

Which grain direction should I use when printing a folding carton dieline?

Paperboard grain direction should always run horizontally (parallel to the main horizontal top/bottom crease lines and perpendicular to the vertical body panels). Horizontal grain increases side-wall compression strength by up to 35% and prevents the lid flap from bowing open.

How wide should the glue flap be on a cosmetic folding carton?

For small cartons (under 60mm wide), a 12mm to 15mm glue flap is standard. For medium to large retail cartons, 15mm to 22mm is required by high-speed folder-gluer machines.

How much clearance should I add around a glass bottle or deck of cards?

For rigid items like playing cards or blister packs, add +1.5mm to Length and Width and +2.0mm to Height. For cylindrical glass dropper bottles, measure the maximum diameter with a caliper and add +2.0mm per axis.
