How to Import .DXF, .SVG & .PDF Files at Exact 1:1 Scale in LightBurn, Illustrator & AutoCAD

Direct Engineering Summary (1:1 Manufacturing Standard) The #1 cause of ruined laser-cut and CNC parts is accidental rescaling during file import: Adobe Illustrator defaults to a legacy 72 DPI coordinate system, whereas Inkscape, LightBurn, and W3C CSS standards use 96 DPI (a 1.3333× or 0.75× scale error), while dimensionless AutoCAD .DXF files often import as inches instead of millimeters (a 25.4× error). Every file exported by CadFold eliminates this problem by embedding explicit physical millimeter attributes (width="...mm" height="...mm") in SVG, setting $INSUNITS=4 and $MEASUREMENT=1 in DXF, and printing a 50.0mm + 1.00-inch physical calibration scale bar on the DIMENSIONS layer.

72 DPI vs 96 DPI SVG Scaling Factor
Scale_Error = 96 / 72 = 1.333333 (or 72 / 96 = 0.75)

Occurs only when an SVG file uses unitless pixel attributes instead of explicit physical 'mm' or 'in' width/height attributes.

PostScript PDF Points to Millimeters Conversion
1.00 mm = 72 / 25.4 = 2.83464567 pt

Exact ISO/PostScript conversion factor used in CadFold's native vector PDF engine.

Shop-Floor Troubleshooting & Engineering FAQs

Why does every CadFold file include a 50.0 mm and 1.00 inch scale bar at the bottom?

The embedded scale bar on the DIMENSIONS layer gives you a 2-second visual and mathematical sanity check inside your laser, CNC, or printing software. If the 50.0 mm bar measures exactly 50.00 mm in your software, your entire project is guaranteed to cut at 100% true 1:1 scale.

Should I delete or turn off the DIMENSIONS layer before sending the job to my laser cutter?

Yes! You can either uncheck 'Include 1:1 Spec Block & Scale Bar' inside the CadFold Studio before downloading, or simply set the gray DIMENSIONS layer to 'Output: OFF' inside LightBurn or AutoCAD.

What should I do if I have a third-party SVG or DXF file with broken scale or open paths?

Use our free Client-Side DXF/SVG Preflight Inspector & Laser Calculator (/tools/dxf-svg-preflight-and-laser-calculator/) to audit open contours, duplicate lines, bounding box dimensions, and machine cut time.
