CO2, Diode & Fiber Laser Kerf Compensation Chart & Press-Fit Finger Joint Math

Direct Engineering Summary (1:1 Manufacturing Standard) Laser kerf (K) is the physical width of material vaporized by the focused laser beam during a through-cut, typically ranging from 0.08 mm on fine diode/fiber lasers to 0.22 mm on 80W–130W CO2 lasers cutting 6mm wood. If a finger-jointed box or slotted laptop stand is drawn with zero kerf compensation, every mating tab-and-slot joint will have 2 × K of loose play and fall apart without glue. To achieve a snap-fit friction joint, outward-protruding male tabs must be widened by +K (+K/2 per side) while enclosed mortise slots must be narrowed by -K (W_slot = T - K).

Parametric Formulas & Dimensional Allowances

Compensated Male Finger Tab Width (W_tab)
W_tab = W_nominal + K

Offsets each vertical side of a protruding male tab outward by +K/2 so the finished physical tab after laser vaporization equals W_nominal + K/2.

Compensated Enclosed Mortise / Half-Lap Slot Width (W_slot)
W_slot = T_measured - K

Because the laser beam removes K/2 around the inner perimeter of a closed slot, drawing the CAD slot at (T - K) results in a physical cutout of exact width T.

Living Hinge Minimum Bend Radius (R_min)
R_min = (T * Pitch_slit) / (2 * K_slit)

Determines how tightly a kerf-cut lattice hinge can bend before adjacent wooden torsion links touch.

Shop-Floor Troubleshooting & Engineering FAQs

Why should I always measure my plywood or acrylic with digital calipers before generating a DXF?

Nominal '3mm' cast acrylic actually varies between 2.65mm and 3.25mm due to the glass-mold casting process, and '3mm' plywood varies with humidity. Even a 0.2mm caliper error will make finger joints protrude or sit recessed if you do not enter your true measured T.

How do I find the exact kerf (K) of my specific laser cutter?

Open our 11-Slot Laser Kerf Calibration Test Gauge Generator, enter your measured material thickness T, cut the small comb on your laser, and slide the mating test tab into the numbered slots until you find the slot with the ideal press fit.

Does focal lens length (1.5 inch vs 2.0 inch vs 4.0 inch) change laser kerf?

Yes. A 1.5" or 2.0" lens produces a smaller spot size (K ≈ 0.10–0.14mm) with a shorter depth of field, while a 2.5" or 4.0" lens for thick 6mm–12mm stock has a wider beam waist (K ≈ 0.18–0.25mm).
